Since the 1950 s,a large number of musical bricks and carvings covering dance, musical instruments and zaju(poetic drama in the Song Dynasty)have been unearthed by archaeologists in southern Shanxi and northwestern Henan. The cultural relics unearthed about musical brick carving were mainly from the period of the Song Dynasty(960-1279 A.D.)and the Jin Dynasty(1115-1234 A.D.).According to the current statistics, there are more than 40 musical bricks and carvings of Song and Jin Dynasties unearthed in southern Shanxi and more than 10 in northwestern Henan.Among them, the unearthed musical bricks and carvings of southern Shanxi were from the Jin Dynasty(1115-1234 A.D.)while the bricks unearthed in northwestern Henan were from the Song Dynasty. As the birthplace of zaju and yuanben(a representative style of Jin Dynasty drama),these two areas, centered on Pingyang(Linfen,Shanxi Province, now)and Bianjing(Kaifeng,Henan Province, now)respectively, were the important areas for the development of Song and Jin music. The unearthing of musical bricks and carvings in the two places is a testimony to the development of music in the Song and Jin Dynasties in southern Shanxi and Northern Henan. The thesis, which is mainly focused on the research to the musical brick carving unearthed from southern Shanxi and northwestern Henan, contains four parts, using the iconography, history, archaeology, and ancient Chinese music history to make a comprehensive analysis of the musical brick carvings unearthed in the tombs of Song and Jin Dynasty in southern Shanxi and northwestern Henan.Firstly,as the social background of musical brick carving in the two places is preliminarily understood through analysis, the unearthed cultural relics of musical brick carving are sorted out,;secondly, through the classification and analysis of musical brick carving cultural relics,a new understanding of the similarities and differences of musical brick carving images in southern Shanxi and northwestern Henan is formed;finally, from the analysis of musical brick carving cultural relics, the characteristics of Song and Jin music culture contained in the musical brick carving are found, which are helpful to further understand the position and value of Song and Jin music development in Chinese music history. The first part mainly discusses the social background of musical brick carving in southern Shanxi and northwestern Henan, and describes it from three aspects:geographical culture, cultural customs and brick carving development,in order to explore the impact of these social backgrounds to the mass arising of Song and Jin musical brick carvings in these two areas. The second part mainly organizes the contents of musical brick carving tomb sites and musical brick carving images in southern Shanxi and northwestern Henan.Musical brick tombs in southern Shanxi are mianly on Linfen and Yuncheng;while musical brick tombs in Northwest Henan are concentrated in Jiaozuo,Luoyang,Sanmenxia and Xuchang. The third part is a comprehensive analysis to the content of the musical brick carving images unearthed in southern Shanxi and Northern Henan, mainly from the two aspects—music and dance brick carving and Zaju brick carving—to discuss and analyze. This part arranges and analyses the attire and adornment of musicians, the action of musicians, the composition of actors, the theme of content and the formation of bands,so as to understand entirely the unearthed cultural relics of musical bricks and carvings. The fourth part conducts research on the cultural features of music in Song and Jin Dynasty from the musical brick carvings unearthed in southern Shanxi and northwestern Henan. It has been primarily discussed from two facets, that is,the prevalence of folk music and art and the transference of musical culture center to reproduce the musical culture life in Song and Jin period on this basis.
