Making Words Sing——Nineteenth-and Twentieth-Century Song is written by an English and American scholar,Jonathan Dunsby. What makes a classical song a song? In a wide-ranging discussion, covering such contrasting composers as Brahms and Berberian,Schubert and Kurtag,Jonathan Dunsby considers the nature of vocality in songs of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The essence and scope of poetic and literary meaning in the Lied tradition is subjected to close scrutiny against the backdrop of ‘new-musicology' thinking and music-theoretical orthodoxies.Within an evidence-based approach,Dunsby analysis the works of the two centuries in this book, but he does not provide a systematic analysis or survey.Instead Dunsby proffers a series of discussions of a number of pieces from both centuries in an effort to understand the special quality of vocal music,or what the author calls “vocality.” Vocality is the core of this book.Different views and methods of thinking in the problem of music and words can make some difference between westerns and ours. The book brings some concerns in the Western world after its publication in Cambridge University, yet it is still not known in our country, and there is no Chinese transition version. Thus my thesis is based on the translation, analysis and research of the book, meanwhile I hope try to obtain the views of Dunsby in the book, and make sure its appeal to all practising musicians and students of Romantic and Modern music.
