Luodian Dragon Boat Custom:the Inheritance Of Intangible Cultural Heritage And The Cultural Identity

The thesis is based on the theme of “Luodian Dragon Boat Custom: the Inheritance of Intangible Cultural Heritage and the Cultural Identity”.From the history context of the custom,the psychological origin,the institutional arrangement of contemporary rebirth,the protection mechanism of the intangible cultural heritage,the urban characteristics,and the inheritance dilemma and strategy,the inheritance,protection and development of the Luodian Dragon Boat Custom in the contemporary urban cultural environment of Shanghai is discussed.The thesis combines its historical development into four stages: the initial stage(Ming Dynasty);the heyday(Qing Dynasty);the period of ups and downs(the Qing Dynasty-the Republic of China-the pre-liberation period);the rebirth stage(after liberation),as well as summarizing the psychological origins of the Luodian Dragon Boat Custom into three factors: totem worship,blessing and sacrificing ancestors.Nowadays,the institutional arrangement of the Luodian Dragon Boat Custom in the contemporary is mainly reflected in the process of the evolution of traditional festival folk custom into a intangible cultural heritage of festivals.This process is produced under the dual international and domestic background.In order to cope with the cultural convergence caused by globalization and modernization,in order to enhance the cultural soft power and establish the international discourse power in the international arena,the official adopted the concept of “Festivals Intangible Cultural Heritage” to protect traditional festivals and folk customs.As a folk custom of the Dragon Boat Festival in Luodian District,Luodian Dragon Boat Custom has different urban characteristics and contemporary values under the background of contemporary social economy and urbanization.It analyzes the urban characteristics of the Luodian Dragon Boat Custom from three aspects:inspiring collective jubilation and promoting social interaction;reshaping cultural identity and strengthening collective identity;building the place spirit and surviving homesick memories.Since 2005,the protection and development mechanism of the intangible cultural heritages in Luodian Town has become more and more perfect,mainly showing the model of government-led,people’s participation,expert guidance,and social support.The protection of Luodian Dragon Boat Custom has basically been obtained extensive support and positive response from all walks of life and local residents.The thesis discusses the main dilemmas faced by the Luodian Dragon Boat Custom in the process of inheritance and development: the misunderstanding between superstition and vulgarity;the historical game between the world and the local;the contradiction between tradition and innovation;the imbalance between powers of the government and the people.And it explores the following four paths and strategies for future development: reconstructing the Dragon Boat Festival faith with “Gold Luodian” story;protecting the urban locality with empowerment education;promoting life development with creative transformation;activating the public participation with informal space.Therefore,it provides evidence-based reference values and sustainable development solutions for the protection and research of the Luodian Dragon Boat Custom and other Festivals Intangible Cultural Heritage.
