Thrity Umrigar(1961-)is an American contemporary indian-american novelist,journalist and critic.Over 17 years in her life,she acted as a journalist working for the Washington post,Huffpost and Boston Globe Mail.Since 2000 when she burst on the literary scene,Thrity has written 10 works,including one memoir about Bombay,eight realistic novels,a story book on chriden.This thesis mainly discusses the theme of Thrity's novel,which consists of introduction,text and conclusion.The introduction part introduces the creation and influence of Thrity Umrigar,analyzes the domestic and foreign scholars' research on Thrity Umrigar,her creation,summarizes the achievements and the existing problems of relevant research.Thrity Umrigar's novels have distinctive realistic characteristics,which is manifested by extensive and deep realistic concern in the themes.She vividly and carefully describes and analyzes various forms of slavery in contemporary society.The text is divided into five chapters,analyzes the author's description of contemporary slavery from such aspects as gender,class,sect and race.Chapter One attaches much importance to the author's revelation of Indian women's fate from the perspective of gender relations.In the Parsi culture of India,women are enslaved,Even if some of the women are well-educated,but they are still conservative in thought and powerless in challenging the cultural tradition,and thus it is unlikely for them to alter the fate of being oppressed by patriarchy.Chapter Two analyzes the enslavement of people by means of the unequal classification of social classes in India.The author provides a clear description of the class oppression in Indian cities and villages and the psychological enslavement of human psychology by the concept of social classes.The third chapter focus on the writer's description of the problems in Indian sects.Considering the real creation background of the stories described in Thrity Umrigar's novels,this paper discusses her criticism of the unequal concept on religions and the sectarian politics behind the Hindu and Muslim conflict.Chapter Four analyzes Thrity Umrigar's criticism of the national concept of inequality in globalization on the basis of the negative impact of economic and cultural globalization on Indian citizens.Chapter Five summarizes the strategies ofeliminating modern slavery and realizing equality and freedom expressed by Thrity Umrigar.She believes that women start to construct their subjectivity is conducive to the resolution of the consequences of gender conflict;Friendship of Transcending classes is beneficial to eliminating the pain caused by class antagonism;Religious belief can comfort the soul and discipline the soul.These aspects show her emphasis on female subjectivity,her pursuit of class equality,and her affirmation of religious values and positive significance,as well as her tireless pursuit of "goodness" and her desire of realizing national equality.Finally,Thrity believes that the interaction between Indian and Western culture conveys an ideal attitude towards heterogeneous cultures,which can also promote the ultimate realization of national equality.The conclusion part summarizes the whole creative style and uniqueness of Thrity Umrigar.The creation of Thrity not only reveals the female exquisite writing features and the female angle of view,but also displays the broad field of vision on society and the profound concern on humanity.The realism of Thrity makes her stand out among the female writers.
