This paper takes the subsequent grammatical components of the duty-based moral modality words in current commentary as the object of research, discussing the characteristics of semantics of moral modality words, subsequent grammatical components and syntactic functions, and making an analysis of the causes of these characteristics and differences from the perspectives of semantics, grammar and pragmatics. The whole paper is divided into six parts. The first part is the introduction. In this part, the author mainly explains the origin and significance of the topic selection, the process of determining the object of study, the current research situation, the research content, the research methods, the research emphases and difficulties, the innovation points and the source of corpus in detail. In the part of the research status,it mainly describes and analyzes moral modality words from five aspects: name, classification, syntactic function, semantics and pragmatics, from which the author has a preliminary understanding of the academic research results. The second part is the semantics and comparison of moral modality words.Firstly, this part compares the meanings of seven moral modal words in Eight Hundred Words of Modern Chinese and Modern Chinese Dictionary, determining the basic semantics they use in context and proving it by examples in corpus. Finally, the author makes statistics on the general usage of moral modality words and their negative forms in current commentary, finds out the frequency of their use separately and analyzes the reasons for these differences. The third part is the comparison of grammatical combinations of moral modality words. In this part, the author firstly analyzes the number and frequency of words, idioms and phrase structures following seven moral modality words, describes their characteristics and differences and analyzes the causes from different perspectives. Then, the number and frequency of the eight negative forms of moral modality words are also counted, and the characteristics, differences and reasons are analyzed. The fourth part is the syntactic function of the moral modality words followed by the grammatical component in sentences. This part mainly analyzes the syntactic functions, describes the differences and characteristics of the syntactic functions of the moral modalitywords followed by grammatical components, and analyses the reasons. The syntactic function of the negative form of moral modality words is also analyzed from these aspects. The fifth part is the grammatical similarities and differences between affirmative and negative forms of moral modality words. This part is mainly to refine the above analysis. From the perspective of contrasting the affirmative forms with the negative forms of moral modality words, the author makes a summary comparison between the grammatical components and their syntactic functions. The sixth part is the conclusion.Firstly, the thesis summarizes the conclusions on semantics, frequency of use, following grammatical components and syntactic functions. Then it briefly expounds the effect of the research conclusions of this paper on Chinese academic research and current commentary writing. Finally,it points out the shortcomings of this paper.
