The mulberry-picking woman is one of the most important images of Yuefu poetry in Han Wei and six dynasties. It has three series:the Qiu Hu’s wife, the Qin Luofu, and the anonymous.Qiu Hu’s wife is a character from Liu Xiang’s book, the Female Biography, who is famous for chastity. This image changed a lot when it entered into Yuefu.Fu Xuan and other poets added many new traits, such as beauty, devotion and strength, which riched the connotation.Qin Luofu is from Mo Shang Sang,a Yuefu poem in Han dynasty. Her original story is similar to the Qiu Hu’s.However, different plots lead to different character.Qin Luofu is a product of the public’s revolting against oppression in Han dynasty. She is characterized by vivid realism and idealism. The anonymous, from Dong Jiao Rao,is a young girl who is always worried about being old and alone. This image reflects the negative emotion of that time and also has high ideological value. These three image series have different features in Han Wei Yuefu poetry. But in Jin,Song and Qi dynasties, the Qiu Hu’s wife and the Qin Luofu series exists convergence. They both despise connotation and think highly of love and appearance. At the same time, the prosperity of southern folk songs results in that the anonymous series is charactered by love and beauty too. Thus the literati also begin to write romance. When it comes to Liang and Chen dynasty, the royal and its literati group bring amorous feelings into Yuefu. All these poems are gorgeous and amorous. This kind of development is consistent with the changes of customs of different time and literati, and general trend is the decadence of spirit and the increase of the pleasure. |
