This report is based on the translation project of What Should Be Wild,a debut novel written by Julia Fine.As a darkly comic tale with doses of magic and suspense,What Should Be Wild is anchored in the author's prodigious imagination.Blending gothic elements and attention-grabbing storyline, the author tactfully builds the atmosphere of gloom and horror in storytelling.Meanwhile,a series of mysterious and dangerous stories of adventures are applied to reveal the initial fears of the young heroine who had been cursed and finally accepted her unique existence and released her power when she grew up.The discussion pertinent to the theme of feminism is also hidden in this book.Once published,What Should Be Wild has been highly recommended by many well-known periodicals like Washington Post and Chicago Review of Books, which manifests its certain literary value. The translator excerpts the First Part(Four Chapters in total)from What Should Be Wild as the source text. For literary translation, the target language should preserve the original meaning and reproduce the charm of the source text.In response to the flexible use of vocabulary and diverse grammatical structures in this novel, translation strategies, including but not limited to contextual amplification and omission, semantic extension, conversion of words and voice, recasting or reconstructing, are employed by the translator under the theoretical guidance of Three Principles of Translation put forward by Alexander Fraser Tytler to address the three problems of lexical ambiguity, narrative levels and the artistic style in the source text. The translator also makes a concrete analysis of approaches to translation by giving examples in this report. This translation project has brought the translator a lot of gains."Understanding and Expression" should be regarded as the core of translation practice.Instead of staying in the surface of the source text, the translator should go deeper into the meaning behind the language so as to understand the author's writing intention. In the meantime, improving the bilingual skills is essential to the translator. Then all the plots in the source text can be truly restored in the translation. Moreover, the original artistic style should be reproduced through elaborate words and sentences,so as to impress target readers with the aesthetic values of the original.
