The Study On The Translation And Research Of Peach Blossom Fan In The English World

Peach Blossom Fan is a brilliant pearl in the history of Chinese classical opera literature,which has extremely important significance.With more researchers showing interests in it,the study of Peach Blossom Fan has not stopped at home.Although the study of it in the English world started relatively late,it still made good achievements in fact,and even enlightened domestic research sometimes.This thesis is based on the translation and research of Peach Blossom Fan in the English world.It is divided into three parts:Firstly,the specific translation and research status of Peach Blossom Fan in the English world are briefly summarized.Secondly,the complete and selected versions of translation are analyzed and compared.Finally,the representative cases of studying Peach Blossom Fan in the English world are discussed.When researching on the translation of Peach Blossom Fan,the first chapter mainly adopts the method of close reading.In terms of the selected version translated by H.C.Chang and complete version by Harold Acton,Chen Shih-hsiang and Cyril Birch,for various elements of opera,each of their translation has its own merits,and the former focuses on the performable while the latter on the readability.However,for Liu Jingting's characterization,through adjusting the sentence pattern,H.C.Chang's version fully displayed the character's boldness and eloquence.When it comes to the selected version by William Dolby,we find that he paid special attention to the different discourse functions of libretto and spoken parts,thus effectively regulating the rhythm of the opera.When terms to the version by Stephen Owen,he noticed the changes of Li Xiangjun's appellations in form as well as Acton did,but his interpretation is much more profound and pioneering.In the analysis of the case study of Peach Blossom Fan,the second chapter mainly discusses Persons.Roles,and Minds:Identity in "Peony Pavilion" and "Peach Blossom Fan" by Tina Lu,Cultural Trans.formation and The Chinese Idea of A Historical Play:Two Early Ching Plays by Ho Lai Lin,and Worldly Stage:Theatricality in Seventeenth-Century China by Sophie Vollp.This part tries to clarify the research method of Western scholars on Peach Blossom Fan,and to further develop the interpretation space of it.
