Taking Virginia Woolf's theory of "androgyny" as the research object, this thesis focuses on exploring the theory from three aspects: the origin and basic connotation of Woolf's theory of "androgyny",the ideal form of Woolf's theory of "androgyny"--Orlando,and the significance and influence of Woolf's theory of "androgyny".The thesis is divided into three parts: introduction, main text and conclusion. The introduction part discusses the research object and value of this paper, combing the domestic and foreign of Woolf "androgyny" theoretical research results and omissions, and explains the research methods and innovation of this thesis. The text consists of three chapters.Chapter one discusses the origin and basic connotation of Woolf's theory of "androgyny".First of all,the formation of Woolf's theory of "androgyny" is closely related to the myth of "androgyny" with a long history in the west and Coleridge's profound understanding that "a great mind must be androgynous".Era opportunity is Woolf's Victorian era and the influence of Bloomsbury Group.Secondly, the basic connotation of Woolf's "androgyny" theory is the harmonious coexistence of male and female power in her mind, which emphasizes an objective and peaceful creative mood that abandons gender prejudice and transcends the thinking mode of binary opposition between men and women.Chapter two discusses the ideal form of Woolf's "androgyny" theory--Orlando.Using the methods of narration and semiotics, this paper makes a detailed interpretation of the ideal form of "androgyny" in Woolf's novel Orlando, and tries to explore its intrinsic value and significance on this basis.First of all, from the perspective of narrative content, the "androgyny" characteristic of Orlando, the protagonist of the story,is mainly manifested as the androgyny temperament inside Orlando and the change of androgyny clothing outside Orlando.Secondly, from the perspective of narrative discourse, the presentation of "androgyny" by the narrator is mainly manifested in the multilevel "dialogue" of the narrative voice and the "psychological time" beyond the reality in the narrative time.Chapter three discusses the significance and influence of Woolf's theory of "androgyny".First of all,the significance of Woolf's androgyny theory lies in the thorough deconstruction of logo centrism and the breaking of gender role stereotypes.Secondly,Woolf's theory of "androgyny" has also exerted a profound influence on later western feminist literary critics, which can be divided into two categories: one is Carolyn Gold Heilbrun's inheritance of Woolf's theory of "androgyny" and Hélène Cixous' s innovation;the other is Elaine Showalter's questioning of Woolf's theory of androgyny and Toril Moi's anti-questioning.The conclusion summarizes that Woolf's theory of androgyny is actually an ideal personality state.Individuals with this personality state have both male and female genders.Woolf's theory of "androgyny" is exactly the resolution of the binary opposition between men and women and coincides with the core idea of the third stage of the development of feminism.
