Literature,as the important carrier of culture, plays an irreplaceable role in the process of Chinese Culture "Going out".After more than half a century of accumulation,Chinese contemporary literature conveys China's economic, political, social, cultural, value and ideological changes in this historical period, providing an inclusive platform for the world to know China. However,Chinese literary translation is faced with many difficulties, looking forward to the optimized theoretical guidance and practical methods.Based on Relevance Theory,Relevance Translation Theory, from the perspective of cognitive pragmatics, provides a new approach for Chinese contemporary literature translation. The purpose of this thesis is to apply the Relevance Theory to the analysis of the English translation of novella Qingyi.Chapter one introduces the research background, its significance, research methods and the layout of the thesis.Chapter two is a literature review, including the study of the English version of Qingyi from various theories and the translation of Chinese literature in guidance of Relevance Theory.Chapter three presents the theoretical framework, including Relevance Theory,Relevance Translation Theory and the related terms. The fourth chapter is divided into two parts. The former part introduces the original author Bi Feiyu and his Qingyi, the translators Howard Goldblatt and Sylvia Li-chun Lin,as well as the translation process of its English translation. The second part is the core of the whole thesis, mainly discussing typical cases selected from the Chinese work and its English version.Translation is a dual ostensive-inferential process. The translator keeps the dominant position in consistently matching the original author's intention with the target reader's expectation. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, involving research findings, limitations and suggestions. In short, this paper discusses the application of the Relevance Translation Theory to the analysis of Qingyi, examines its only English translation version, and evaluates the applicability of the theory to English translation. The author argues that, although some inevitable inadequacies in cross-cultural communication exist,it is feasible to apply the Relevance Translation Theory to guide the English translation of-Chinese contemporary literature. At last, this study hopes to shed some light on the research of Chinese literary translation into the English world.
