Salut! Demeure chaste et pure is an extremely difficult tenor aria that is sung widely. It is selected from the French composer Cournot opera Faust and its melody is long and graceful, refreshing as a model of lyrical opera. This work is complex in emotional expression, which not just likes a sincere emotional expression in Puccini's Che gelida manina, nor shamed remorse in Addio Fiorito Asil.It has a monologue with a strong inner contradiction. As some scholars think "Faust is a soul of game, and he is torn between life and death, spirit and flesh, god and demons." As well, some other scholars think,"Cournot opera Faust has excavated the contradiction between the "ideal","pursuit","creation" and human desire about life, which is a long-term social problem with practical significance to this day." Therefore, the author attempts to excavate the deep connotation in Salut! Demeure chaste et pure from its emotional expression of Faust's contradiction between good and evil,so as to help singers perform well.
