In English learning,reading is an effective way of improving students'comprehensive language using ability,so it occupies an important position in English teaching.It is also a major test type in the College Entrance Examination.In recent years,with the use of the national unified test papers in Fujian's College Entrance Examination,there is a new reading test type in English,"Choosing Five Ones from Seven Choices" reading question.This kind of reading brings a big challenge to high school students.Most of them think that it is difficult to deal with and they lose lots of scores in this type of reading.Therefore,to equip the student with effective reading strategies for the"Choosing Five Ones from Seven Choices" reading is of critical significance.According to the various studies of experts and scholars at home and abroad,Discourse Cohesion Theory plays an important role in English reading teaching.Cohesion,which exists everywhere in an article is a typical theory in discourse analysis.It includes grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion.Grammatical cohesion consists of reference,substitution,ellipsis,conjunction.Lexical cohesion consists of reiteration and collocation.Knowing and using the grammatical and lexical cohesion will enable the students to analyse the text in a more effective way.That will facilitate the students to understand the author's writing intention,understand the overall logical relation and the text structure.Therefore,this thesis aims at applying the discourse cohesion theory to the "Choosing Five Ones from Seven Choices" reading teaching to get the students to master the cohesion strategies and thus improve their reading ability and raise their reading scores.To be specific,this thesis is going to answer three questions:1)What are the problems and current situation of high school students when facing the reading comprehension of"Choosing Five Ones from Seven Choices"?2)Is it meaningful to apply the discourse cohesion theory in "Choosing Five Ones from Seven Choices" reading teaching?3)If it is meaningful to apply the discourse cohesion theory in "Choosing Five Ones from Seven Choices" reading teaching,what are the useful reading strategies?What are the implications for the teachers' reading teaching?In this thesis,two senior2 classes with the same English level are selected as the experimental subjects.One is experimental class and the other is controlled class.During the whole experiment,the experimental class adopted the teaching method with the guidance of discourse cohesion theory,while the controlled class followed the traditional teaching mode.All other conditions were the same.The findings of this study are:1)Senior students' reading amount is far from enough.Senior students' vocabulary is too little and they do not keep a good habit of reading.They are lacking in reading strategies.2)It is meaningful to apply the discourse cohesion theory in "Choosing Five Ones from Seven Choices" reading teaching.3)The reading strategies under the guidance of discourse cohesion theory are grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion.In the end,this thesis put forwards some teaching implications for English teachers and points out the limitations of this study as well as the orientations for the further research.
