Linda Hogan is an American contemporary Indian female writer.Her poems and novels focus on issues of humanity,nature,land,history,tradition,identity and race.She incorporates real Indian history stories into the novel.Her works reflect on the history that beyond the mainstream and lead people to think.This thesis reveals the ecological consciousness from the perspective of spiritual ecology through analysing the novel People of the Whale.The balanced spiritual ecology has a profound impact on human beings and maintain human's healthy spirit state.This thesis focuses on Thomas' s spiritual state which change with the change of the environment.And it shows the importance of the spiritual ecology.The purpose is to awaken people's ecological awareness,so that human beings would pay attention to the spiritual ecology in a global environment of tech-logical advancement.This thesis includes three parts: introduction,main body and conclusion.The first part is introduction.It introduces Linda Hogan and her literary achievements,the research of Hogan's works and the introduction of this novel.This thesis have practical significance through combing the spiritual ecology and ecocriticism theory on Hogan's works.The first part includes theoretical foundations,including the origin of spiritual ecology theory and the researches of related scholars.The development and definition of spiritual ecology is included mainly in this part.The following parts explore Hogan's ecological thoughts through the spiritual ecology theory.And the ecological consciousness and spiritual ecology are reflected in the novel.The next part includes three chapters which apply the theory of spiritual ecology to the analysis of the text.It explores the life experience and mental journey of the protagonist,Thomas.The first chapter mainly talks about that people depend on the natural environment.Their spirits change with the development of social ecology and natural ecology.At beginning,people depend on nature.But later,the alienation appears in the social environment.The second chapter discusses the alienation of spirit from many aspects.Including the alienation of existence,the inability of behavior and the vacuum of spirit.In chapter three,the environment environment isrestored.The spirits also return to balance in traditional culture.Through these three stages,it shows the changes that have taken place in the society under the influence of industrial civilization and war.The spiritual imbalance is caused by social ecology and natural ecology.It can be seen that the spiritual ecology is becoming more and more important in human society.The healthy development of spirit is meaningful for ecological balance.The conclusion summarizes that human is not only a biological and a social existence,but most important,a spiritual existence.Spiritual ecology explores the relationship between human spiritual activity and the biological system.The experiences of the characters in the novel shows that people should maintain the balance of the spirit and form correct values.At the same time,people should regulate ethical and moral behaviors.In this way,we can alleviate the contradictions between human growth and social development.The human spirit interacts with the earth's ecology.The harmony between spirit and nature is very important.Human beings should pay attention to the consistency between spirit ecology and natural ecology,and it is important to make sure the harmony between spirit ecology and social ecology.And the healthy development of spiritual ecology.
