Subtitle translation is of great significance for cultural exchanges.Documentaries recording some aspects of reality can help the audience to get a close look at the real lives of people from different cultural backgrounds. At present, there are fewer studies on Chinese-English subtitle translation than on English-Chinese subtitle translation both at home and abroad, still less in the field of documentary subtitles.Documentary China Lives is a major program to celebrate the 19th Communist Party of China National Congress. In translating the culture-specific items(hereafter referred to as CSIs)in its subtitles, this author was faced with these challenges:how to transmit the meaning of CSIs to the target audience properly and promote their understanding of the documentary when confronted with time and spatial constraints. It is critical to the audience's comprehension.Studies combining subtitle translation and cultural exchanges are meaningful. In terms of studies on CSIs,Aixela,Nida and Newmark all proposed their own classification methods.Besides,Aixela also proposed eleven strategies for translating CSIs.According to the characteristics of China Lives' subtitles, this report adopts Aixela's classification methods and divides CSIs in the subtitles into proper nouns and common expressions, both of which are subdivided. For each example, there is an explanation about how to translate CSIs under the guidance of Aixela's strategies.Based on its analysis, this report comes to a conclusion that the most frequently used strategies are intratextual gloss, absolute universalization, and naturalization. No matter which strategy is applied,it is important to adjust according to the corresponding motion pictures, contexts, time and spatial constraints in the documentary. In doing so,the cultural concept of each CSI can be maintained and the target audience can understand them without getting confused.Meanwhile, the translation,as required,is concise and clear.
