The development of information technology and the mutual penetration of multiculturalism have transformed the communication of information into a process of multimodal participation in the construction of meaning,and it is not enough to analyze and study only from the perspective of language.Therefore,the theory of multimodal discourse analysis has been widely concerned by many scholars.At present,although the domestic multimodal discourse analysis and foreign language teaching are still in their infancy,they have developed rapidly in theory and practice in recent years.With the continuous integration of information technology and curriculum,teachers are increasingly using multimodal teaching models.This study selects the 12~thh session of national middle school English demonstration class as the research object,mainly using the methods of educational observation and literature analysis.The research instrument is the video annotation software ELAN.This paper focuses on the application of multimodality in middle school English classroom teaching.The main research aims to 1.Observe what modalities the teacher used in the demonstration class.2.Analyze what role each modality plays.3.Explore the specific embodiment of the interrelationship of various modalities.This paper reviews the research status of multimodal discourse analysis at home and abroad,researches design and data collection for research problems,analyzes data based on multimodal discourse analysis and summarizes the implicature for middle school English classroom teaching and teachers.Through statistics,the author founds that:1.Teachers can mobilize a variety of modalities for teaching,such as visual modality,auditory modality,behavioral modality and environmental modality,to provide students with a real language environment as much as possible.2.Each modality plays a very important role.The art characters,recordings,videos,and so on as teaching aids promote the teaching effect by attracting students'attention and highlighting key points.3.In addition to complementary relationships(e.g.enhanced relationship),there are also non-complementary relationships(e.g.redundant relationship)between modalities.The specific situation is illustrated in the comparative analysis of the teaching videos of two identical topics.Based on the research findings,this paper puts forward the following suggestions on the practical application of multimodality in middle school English teaching:1.Teachers must have the awareness and ability to apply information education and effectively improve the utilization rate of teaching media.2.English teachers should focus on improving their professionalism,learn more about the MDA theory,and learn to use the enhanced and complementary relationship between different modes such as visual modality and auditory modality to improve the teaching effect.3.In teaching,the cooperation and coordination between technicians and English teachers should be deepened.This paper analyzes the application of multimodality in middle school English classroom teaching,and aims to promote the full mobilization of multiple modal resources.It strives to promote teachers'self-improvement and professional growth and increase students'interest in English learning,which provides a new case for multimodal and related research.
