On The Translation Of English Cohesive Devices In Yoruba Woman,Work And Social Change

Discourse is the most basic unit of communication.And a clear and coherent discourse must be achieved via cohesive devices.Both English and Chinese employ a lot of cohesive devices.However,due to differences in culture,society and ways of thinking,the two languages have different expression habits and grammar.Therefore,the use of cohesive devices is not the same.In the process of translation,in addition to mastering the ways of thinking of the two languages,the translator must also reasonably deal with cohesive devices in order to produce the idiomatic target language.In the translation practice,I choose several chapters of Yoruba Woman,Work and Social Change to translate,which employ too many cohesive devices.How to reasonably deal with cohesive devices in order to produce a clear and coherent translation text is what a translator should consider.This report intends to look into the translation strategies used in grammatical cohesive devices.Based on Halliday and Hasan's classification of cohesive devices in Cohesion in English,many scholars have conducted a contrastive study on cohesive devices between English and Chinese and put forward some strategies:(a)to retain original cohesive devices;(b)to omit original cohesive devices;(c)to convert original cohesive devices.In this report,I analyze the function of grammatical cohesive devices in the chosen translation examples based on Halliday and Hasan's research and adopt different translation strategies.There are some similar cohesive devices in both English and Chinese,so some English cohesive devices can be retained.And some English cohesive devices can be omitted on condition that the logical order is very obvious in Chinese text.Also some English cohesive devices can be converted into corresponding nouns in Chinese text.In English-Chinese translation,the translator should keep the similarities and differences between the two languages in mind and choose proper ways to deal with cohesive devices in the source text to produce a more concise and coherent target text.
