A Practice Report On The Consecutive Interpreting Task Of The Lecture Of Uncertainty And Risk By A Visiting Scholar From America

With the rapid development of China’s economy and scientific technologies,academic exchanges between domestic and foreign universities are far more frequent.Every year,many experts and scholars from home and abroad offer lectures in universities to disseminate new information and explore academic development tendencies of disciplines.This thesis is the practice report of this consecutive interpreting,the corpus of which is collected from the lecture Uncertainty and Risk by Dr.Udbye from University of Puget Sound in America.The author was one of thte interpreters in this consecutive interpreting.There are many types of interpreting such as simultaneous interpreting,conference interpreting,and escorting interpreting,etc.Consecutive interpreting is one of the most widely used forms.In the case of consecutive interpreting,an interpreter can take notes before interpreting and the speaker will have to stop to wait until the interpreting is finished in order to make the communication go smoothly.The theoretical basis of this practice report is Functionalist Skopos theory which lays an emphasis on the functions and purposes of translation,the author makes a detailed analysis of the mistakes such as missing information and incomplete interpretation respectively from the three rules of purpose,coherence,and fidelity from Skopos theory and also the merits in the wake of employing proper interpreting techniques.By analysis and comparison,the author presents the modified interpreting version and summarizes some disadvantageous factors such as limitation of professional knowledge and psychological anxiety which are relevant to the negative influence on interpreting on the spot.In the end,the author summarizes some strategies to improve the quality of interpreting as follows:1)strengthening the interpreting skills,2)enhancing the interpreters’ public speaking abilities,3)fully preparing for interpreting,and 4)extensively accumulating encyclopedic knowledge.The author hopes that this practice report can provide some references for beginners of interpreting.
