The Appreciation And Market Of Lin Fengmian’s Painting

This paper discusses LIN Fengmian’s paintings from the perspective of calligraphy and painting authentication and market in China.LIN Fengmian devoted his whole life into the artistic exploration integrating East and West,so his works were characterized with diversified themes,varied styles,huge system etc.Therefore,this paper fully and accurately analyzes the painting styles of LIN Fengmian’s works with different themes as well as their evolution,thus to deepen people’s understanding on LIN Fengmian’s paintings,and lay a solid foundation for the authentication of his paintings.This paper deeply discusses the authentication problem of LIN Fengmian’s paintings.There are relatively large differences between LIN Fengmian’s paintings and the traditional Chinese paintings,so for people who have got used to appreciating traditional Chinese paintings,it is hard to appreciate and authenticate his paintings.Moreover,there are no years and inspirations on most of his paintings,which not only increases the difficulty to study the stage division of his paintings,but also provides an exploitable loophole to counterfeiters.For this reason,this paper sets forth the main methods used to authenticate LIN Fengmian’s paintings from the perspectives of the overall arrangement and composition,the ink,strokes and lines,and the coloring system of his paintings,as well as the auxiliary basis used to authenticate his paintings from the perspectives of inscription and seal,painting tools,and paper.To some extent,this paper fills up the blank in the research in the authentication of his paintings,which is also beneficial for the healthy circulation of his paintings in the artwork market.At the end of 1970 s,LIN Fengmian’s Art Exhibition was held in Shanghai Art Museum,and LIN Fengmian and his paintings which had sunk in sleep for half a century reentered people’s sight,and gradually accepted and favored by them.When Sotheby and Christie’s started to auction Chinese calligraphies and painting in 1980 s,LIN Fengmian’s paintings were the auction items frequently seen in the two auctions,and the price of his paintings was once several times higher than LU Yanshao’s paintings,and even equally matches with the price of ZHANG Daqian and FU Baoshi’s paintings,so his paintings became the highlights in the two grand Hong Kong auctions for a time.However,for the reasons that the artwork market in China lacks reasonable and effectively management system for a long time,the widespread counterfeits have become a normal state,and the buyers don’t have a good understanding on his paintings,Lin Fengmian’s paintings are left out in the artwork market,and the low price has become a status in quo.Just in terms of auction price in current market,LIN Fengmian’s paintings have been unable to be equated with the paintings from other contemporaneous masters such as XU Beihong,QI Baishi,HUANG Binhong,PAN Tianshou,FU Baoshi etc.,and had to condescend to the awkward situation that his paintings can be only sold at the price of a second-rate painter’s works.This paper combines the market survey data,and analyzes the two aspects,the current market situation of LIN Fengmian’s paintings and the factors affecting the market price of his painting,to discuss the market of LIN Fengmian’s paintings,and then the recent market situation and prospect of his paintings.This paper deeply analyzes LIN Fengmian’s painting style,authentication and market research of his paintings,and is of certain significance and value.
