Carson McCullors(1917-1967)was a famous American female writer in the20 th century.She always created novels during the changing of space,so her whole writing career was closely related to "space consciousness".The object of this paper is the space narration of her novels.The theme of this paper is the study on the spatial-narrative of Carson Mccullers’ s novels,which based on the novels of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter,The Ballad of the Sad Cafe,The Member of the Wedding.This paper will refer to western literary theory in the space of narrative research,combine with the new development of the spatial narrative theory in China in recent years to study McCullors’ novels,and try to analyse the space connotation in them and dig out the deeper meaning of the novels.This paper consists of an introduction,three chapters and a conclusion.The first part is the introduction,which briefly introduces the life of McCullers,presents the research status of McCullers at home and abroad,discusses the development of spatial narrative theory,and the research significance and methods of this paper.The second part is the presentation of physical space in McCullers’ novels.Starting from the macro background and micro architecture of the story,it analyzes the role of physical space in the narrative process of novels.The third part is the generation of the dreamlike space in the novel,which interprets the special spatial narrative strategy adopted by McCullers from the virtual space such as the dream and the stream of consciousness.The fourth part is the spatial structure of the text of the novel,and discusses the spatial features of McCullough’s novels from the perspectives of the relationship between space and time,juxtaposition and repetition.The fifth part is thesignificance of space narration in the novel,focusing on the significance of space narration to the theme and aesthetic characteristics of the novel.The presentation of various Spaces and the use of various spatial narrative techniques make McCullers’ novels unique in terms of theme and aesthetic.On the basis of intensive reading of McCullers’ novels,this paper combines relevant spatial narrative theories to deepen the understanding of spatial significance and spatial narrative theory of McCullers’ novels.
