Among the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, reading is usually considered to be the most important one, because reading is the main way for learners to acquire language input in the process of foreign language learning. Therefore, reading teaching is an important part of high school English teaching. In recent years, the scores of reading comprehension and cloze test in college entrance examination have accounted for more than seventy percent of the total scores. So the key to improving English performance is to improve the reading performance.A large number of studies show that reading strategies can not only improve students' reading ability, but also effectively exercise their autonomous learning ability.Fine arts students refer to those applying to fine arts programs or fine arts colleges in the national college entrance examination. In recent years, most colleges set relatively low admission standards concerning the academic scores for those fine arts students.Taking Heilongjiang Province as an example, the minimum admission score for liberal arts students and science students of first-tier and second–tier universities is 481,455,400 and 355 respectively. However, the minimum admission score for liberal arts and science students applying to athletic programs and fine arts programs is 240 and 201,239 and 212 respectively.Under such circumstances, most fine arts students have weak foundations in their academic subjects.Concerning the fact that most fine arts students need to take professional exams held by each province besides the national college entrance exam, they have little time and energy to prepare for their academic subjects exams. This is especially the case for their English learning. The biggest obstacle for these students is their reading comprehension capability, which accounts for their low scores in the subject of English. Therefore, the main focus of this thesis is the possibility of enhancing the reading comprehension capability of these fine arts students through intensive reading strategies training.Taking the theory of reading strategy, which is part of learning strategy,as the theoretical guidance, this thesis takes 105 art students as study objects who from the high school in which the author work and conducts a practical study of English reading strategies in high school. The training results show that reading strategies play a positive role in improving students' interest and ability in reading. The thesis consists of five parts.Chapter one generally describes the background, purpose and significance of the study, and the framework of the thesis.Chapter two is literature review. In this part, some previous literature related to this study will be introduced, including the definition and classification of language learning strategies, the definition and classification of reading strategies and the general concepts of reading ability.Chapter three elaborates the whole process of this teaching practical research. It illustrates the research question, research object, research methods and specific implementation plan of this practical research.Chapter four is data collection and discussion. This part presents a detailed result and discussion about the reading strategies training.Chapter five summarizes the main achievements of this practical research and illustrates the limitations of this study as well as put forward some personal suggestions for the reading teaching of arts students in senior high school. The training results show that students can realize their own potential of learning through the reading strategies training.Reading strategies training stimulates students' learning strategy sense in their English reading, which change their parrot-fashion learning method and improve their reading efficiency.
