This report is based on the author's translating excerpts from Environmental and Health Issues in Unconventional Oil and Gas Development,written by Debra Kaden and Tracie Rose,which includes parts of Introduction,Chapter One and Chapter Two.The book explores the environmental and health issues in unconventional oil and gas development in the United States.Although China is abundant in unconventional oil and gas resources,the issues on its development has been of great concern.The United States is the first country in the world to develop unconventional natural gas with the highest level of techniques.Therefore,it is of great significance for China to learn from the United States on the issues of oil and gas development.The report consists of four parts: the first part is task description,the second part process description,the third part case analysis and the fourth part conclusion.The part of task description mainly introduces the significance,objectives,methodology as well as the originality of the translation practice.The process description includes pre-translation preparations,the analysis of original text and proofreading.By analyzing the differences between English and Chinese in the part of case analysis,the author discusses the application of Catford's “Translation Shifts” theory to the target text from the perspective of vocabulary,syntax and discourse.The part of conclusion mainly summarizes the difficulties and shortcomings of this translation practice as well as the qualities that a professional translator should be equipped with.
