From the perspective of cross-cultural research on comparative literature, this thesis conducts a comparative study of pilgrim's progress with three redemption themed works, namely, the bible, journey to the west and the kite runner.Firstly,it explores the universality of redemption motif in world literature.Secondly, through the specific comparison between the works, the narrative characteristics of the redemption motif and the differences of redemption methods in the works are explored. Finally, this thesis combines literary study with anthropological study by using the critical method of literary anthropology to explore the cultural value of the redemption motif of the pilgrim's progress. The thesis consists of four parts:The first part mainly analyzes the redemption motif in world literature and demonstrates the universality of redemption motif and the reasons for its existence.Based on the theory of thematics in comparative literature, this thesis explains and differentiates the concepts of redemption motif and redemption motif in literary works. Then, this thesis analyzes the redemption motif in world literature by examples, and demonstrates the universality of redemption motif in world literature. The second part explores the ways in which redemption motifs are expressed in different works through the comparison of works, and summarizes their common features in the narrative structure. The three parts of the redemption process, the origin of redemption, the process of redemption and the result of redemption, are similar in narration. The origin of redemption is that human beings are punished for their mistakes. The protagonist who struggles with sin wants to save the sinful life through redemption,so that life can develop in a higher and better direction. In the process of redemption, the protagonists in the four works have gone through a bumpy journey to reach the end point. The thesis uses Frye's archetypal criticism theory to refer to the protagonist's spiritual journey as a U-curve plot.In the redemption results, the protagonists of the four works have experienced the transformation of life, from sin to rebirth, and completed the ultimate redemption. The third part discusses the difference of redemption methods in the motif of redemption through the comparison of works. The redemption methods of the hero can be divided into two types: conscious redemption and non-conscious redemption. This part makes a detailed analysis of the psychology of the redeeming characters in the four works.Through the analysis of the psychology of the characters, the main redemption methods are obtained.Combined with the works and the typical characters in the works, two different redemption methods are analyzed in detail. The fourth part expounds the cultural value of the redemption motif, which explains the specific value generated by the redemption motif. This thesis analyzes the social and literary value of the redemption motif respectively and further explains the great value of the redemption motif. The social value mainly elaborated the humanity spirit the redemption motif contains,as well as the humanity reflection to the redemption behavior, and the literary value is mainly discussed from the two aspects: the characters in the redemption motif and the characteristics of the narrative structure of the motif.
