A Narrative Inquiry Of Novice English Teachers' Career Adaption

The entry period of novice teachers is the process of transforming the role from students to teachers,and the process of transition from passive learning to active teaching.The adaptability during this period has an important impact on the career development and professional development of the novice teachers.In recent years,with the increasing emphasis on education in the country,the social status of teachers and salary issues have been improved,and more and more students have chosen teachers as their jobs after graduating from colleges.The novice teachers often encounter some adaptive problems in their entry period of the career,and how to deal with these adaptive problems and make teachers develop better are concerned by educators.It is found that compared with pre-employment training and post-employment training,there are not many studies on the entry stage of the novice teachers and there are few studies on the novice English teachers in junior high school.Therefore,it is of positive significance to study the career adaption of the novice English teachers in junior high schools.The author takes the career adaption of junior high school teachers as the research topic,and invites a junior high school English teacher(Miss Fu)as the research participant.Based on the theoretical framework of Humanism and Adaptation Theory,this study uses narrative inquiry as the research paradigm,and case study as the research method to analyze the teaching life of Miss Fu and discuss her adaptive problems.This study intends to answer the following two research questions:(1)What adaptive problems do novice English teachers encounter during the period of career adaption?(2)What are the influencing factors of novice English teachers' career adaption?The author conducts a three-month observation of the research participant.Through interviews with Miss Fu and her colleagues,and author's observations in and out of classrooms,the author analyzes and discusses the following conclusions:(1)The novice English teachers mainly encounter the adaptive problems from the aspects of interpersonal communication,teaching and school environment.(2)The factors that influence the career adaption of novice English teachers are mainly about teacher's personal characters,teaching skills,learning ability and work stress,school evaluation system and school support system.This study hopes to provide a certain guiding role for improving the adaptability of the novice English teachers in junior high school,and finally hopes to provide suggestions for them to have a better career development.
