The Southern and Northern Dynasties was the key period for Buddhism to spread in China, during which dozens of countries, large or small, appeared successively in China.Among these countries,Northern Wei Dynasty is one of the countries which played a key role in the spread of Buddhism. As a minority country ruled by the Tuoba clan in Xianbei, the rulers of Northern Wei Dynasty did not know Buddhism very well from the beginning. On the contrary,Buddhism gradually entered Pingcheng in Northern Wei Dynasty and was accepted by the Northern Wei society in the process of the Northern Wei conquest of northern area. However, with the great esteem of Buddhism from all walks of life in the Northern Wei Dynasty, the spread of Buddhism in the Northern Wei Dynasty also reached its peak. From the perspective of communication, the paper studied the dissemination of Buddhism in Northern Wei Dynasty.Taking time as the main line, according to the sequence of cultural transplantation, cultural rooting, cultural prosperity, cultural diffusion and cultural counter-phagocytosis,it is divided into five chapters.Since the introduction of Buddhism into Pingcheng of Northern Wei Dynasty in Liangzhou, monks have adopted different communication strategies to spread Buddhism to the royal family and the folk. This is the choice made by Buddhists after they have understood the society of Northern Wei Dynasty and even the whole Chinese cultural environment in the same period. In addition,in the chapter of cultural diffusion, the author focuses on the object of grotto statues, and holds that the spread of grotto statues from west to East is its geographical diffusion;as a time-biased medium,Grottoes break the regional restrictions and play a positive role in the spread of Buddhism in Northern Wei Dynasty and subsequent dynasties.
