Margret Atwood is one of the most famous contemporary Canadian writers who is honored as “the queen of Canadian literature”.The suppression of nature and women in patriarchal society is always her major focus.With her pen,she tries to call on people to protect nature and liberate all the females to get out of the prison of the male authority.She writes a number of well-known works concerning nature and female's situation in her whole life.The Handmaid's Tale,published in 1985,is one of her representative works.This thesis studies the theme of nature and female characters' oppression and resistance by using the Eco-feminism approach.In The Handmaid's Tale,Margret Atwood elaborates a fact of the oppression and predicament of nature and females in Gilead and also shows the awakening and revenge of nature and the spirit of resistance of female in the patriarchal society.Therefore,this thesis employs the Eco-feminism approach to analyze the oppressive and resistant theme in The Handmaid's Tale.Firstly,this thesis focuses on the oppression of the nature and females in the patriarchal society.Secondly,this thesis analyzes the awakening of nature and the resistance of the females.Both nature and females try to use their own ways to resist against the patriarchal society.In this thesis,the author analyzes the oppressive and resistant theme in The Handmaid's Tale in a relatively comprehensive way.It will to some extent help people to get to know the Atwood's Eco-feminist thoughts better.And it can also be a loud warning to people that we should protect nature at once.What's more,females should not be cheated by the present equality between males and females.However,there still exist some inevitable limits and shortcomings which are needed to further improve.
