A Study Of Question-Answer In Jin Xing Show Based On Linguistic Adaptation Theory

The talk show has gradually developed into a fashion and become one of the audience’s favorite program forms since the 1980 s.As a large elaborate cultural fashion talk show,Jin Xing Show is hosted by the famous dancer Jin Xing,which focuses on cultural and recreational hot topics and the people’s daily life.It has had high ratings in the recent two years,and has been at the top of the ratings list for many times.The sharp and candid hosting style of Jin Xing,together with the colorful contents of the program,has brought the show numerous audiences and a favorable reception.The verbal communication between the host(hostess)and the guests is the primary content of the interviewing program.The verbal communication is reviewed as the most elementary,most common and most direct way in the interpersonal contact,in which the question-answer(Q-A)system is the primary unit,considering that most of the interpersonal communication is conducted in the form of question-asking and question-answering.This has made it the important one of linguists’ researches.As a ubiquitous language phenomenon,the Q-A sequences in talk shows provide rich and authentic corpora for the study of this language mechanism.Based on Jef Verschueren’s linguistic adaptation theory,the thesis chooses the part “Jin Xing Time” in Jin Xing Show as the research target to make a tentative analysis of the dynamic adaptation of its question-answer sequences from the perspective of pragmatics.The present study attempts to make an analysis of the hostess’ s and the guests’ flexible and tactful language use in the Q-A acts based on their conscious or unconscious dynamic interadaptation with the contextual correlates in the three worlds considering certain pragmatic principles and strategies,with the expectation of illustrating the success of Jin Xing Show from the perspective of pragmatics.On the basis of the potential contextual correlates of adaptability of the linguistic adaptation theory and the characteristics of variability,negotiability and adaptability of language,the thesis intends to throw light on the dynamic interadaptation of question-answer acts between the hostess and the guests with the potential contextual correlates in the three worlds(physical world,social world and mental world)in the communicative context,which is correspondingly the main task of the study.Chapters Three,Four and Five are the main body of the thesis.Chapter Three probes into the adaptation of Q-A sequences to the physical world.Chapter Four expounds the adaptation of Q-A sequences to the social world.Chapter Five illustrates the adaptation of Q-A sequences to the mental world.The thesis randomly chose 25 episodes broadcasted in 2016,and finished the transcription of Q-A sequences in “Jin Xing Time” as the linguistic materials to establish a basic research corpus.All the examples were selected from the 25 episodes.The combination of videos and subtitles brought much convenience to the present study.In accordance with the constructed theoretical framework,and with the exemplification of concrete examples,the present study conducts an in-depth analysis on the interadaptation of question-answer acts between the hostess and the guests with the potential contextual correlates,to illustrate the variability,negotiability and adaptability of Q-A sequences and the realization of its dynamic adaptation to the communicative context during its production and interpretation.
