In China,English learning and teaching in senior high school have attracted much attention.Writing,as one of the basic abilities,is very essential for English learning.Writing is not only a kind of learning skill which demands students to fully master basic vocabulary,grammar,and sentence patterns,but also a criterion to judge the quality of English teaching.However,writing remains a big problem for most teachers and students in senior high schools as a result of inadequate vocabulary,the negative influence of Chinese writing habits and a lack of correct grammar sentence patterns.Based on the above background,the author of this thesis comes up with a teaching model of combining the process-genre approach with essay recitation-imitation together to improve senior high school students’ writing ability,which includes the following steps: presenting the model essays,analyzing the structure in class,reciting after class,checking the recitation,imitating a similar genre-based composition,group discussion,the teacher’s evaluation and summarizing the accumulating materials.This approach stresses the importance of analysis of model text in class and reciting input as well as the conscious imitation.In the process of writing,students acquire not only vocabulary,sentence patterns but also writing skills.Recitation after class can help them strengthen and consolidate the content of materials learned in class.Group discussion in class enables students to actively participate in the whole writing process.In the process of teaching,teachers and model essays play a guiding role while students play a leading role in the writing and group discussion.The approach can summarize the genre structure and language features of the discourse,and at the same time emphasize the students’ timely imitation output.In the writing teaching process,students can acquire vocabulary as well as writing skills.In this thesis,two classes of 88 senior high school students from Wuhai No.6 Middle School were taken as the research objects for four months.The author wants to test whether the process-genre approach based on essay recitation-imitation works to students’ writing and find answers to the following questions:1 Can the process-genre approach based on essay recitation-imitation help students gain confidence in English writing?2 Can the process-genre approach based on essay recitation-imitation improve the English writing abilities of students?Through experiments,questionnaires and interviews,all the data results were collected.It has been proved that the process-genre approach based on essay recitation-imitation really has a good effect on the improvement of students’ writing ability.Students of different levels have been improved and they have gained noticeable confidence from the writing process.In the meantime,they actively take part in the writing process.They have really gained more vocabulary,sentence patterns and writing skills,which has greatly improved English writing.In conclusion,the process-genre approach based on essay recitation-imitation in the writing teaching can be effective to senior students’ writing ability and improve their interest and confidence.However,due to the short time,the limited number of participants and the weak foundation of the students,the experiment needs further study.
