A Study On Hedges Used In English Subtitle Of Downton Abbey Season ?

Hedges are some of the linguistic forms that people use to change the degree of fuzzy in order to achieve ideal communicative effects in social communication.It has a unique role in verbal communication that cannot be replaced by precise language.Using hedges correctly can achieve good communicative effects.If not,it will affect communication.In this paper,the corpus material is the English subtitle in Downton Abbey season I.This paper investigates the use of Hedges in different relationships,and explores the discourse meaning and pragmatic functions of hedges further.It reveals the relationship between hedges and the social relations,generations and gender of the characters.Formal description and data testing of some hedges can establish the machine recognition rules of natural language processing.This article is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,this part mainly discusses the meaning of the topic,introduces the research status of the definition and the classification.This paper also introduces the basic situation of Downton Abbey and the research methods ofThe second chapter is the classification of hedges.On the basis of previous research results,the classification of the hedges contained linguistic and pragmatic.Enumerating the hedges in English subtitle and analyze the use of various hedges in the different roles.The third chapter talks about the use of difference hedges between the different roles.The differences of using hedge are from the perspectives of social relations,generational relationships and gender relations.The fourth chapter analyzes the pragmatic function of hedges which based on the Cooperative Principle and the Manner Principle.The fifth chapter is a case study of lexical ambiguity resolution.Taking several representative hedges as examples,analyzing their semantic features and positional relationships,in order to combs the linguistics used for machine recognition.The last chapter is the conclusion.Summarizing the research findings,research implications,research deficiencies and research prospects.This paper expands the research on the study of hedges,which is based on a closed corpus,through a large number of proofs.Analyzes the frequency and pragmatic use of specific hedges,and studies the differences in the use of hedges.It also helps the computer to recognize the hedges in the English subtitle better,and provides knowledge and rules for the computer to understand the dialogue language.This paper aims to help readers to understand the language expression in foreign TV dramas,and understand the story more deeply.
