Hybridity represents a common phenomenon in translation.Linguistic hybridity in the translated text is underpinned by social factors entangled with each other.Cultural Production Theory put forward by Pierre Bourdieu, the French sociologist, abstracts field, habitus and capital as its conceptual tools, which has been applied to translation studies since 1990 s for the cross-disciplinary research into translation process and mechanics.Cultural capital, one of the key concepts of the theory, covers abundant resources, like literary output, bilingual and bi-cultural knowledge, education diploma etc. Thus,it might deepen the understanding of social factors behind hybridity in translation by abstracting the translated text as hybridized cultural capital on the basis of the conceptual tools in Bourdieu‘s sociology. This research, relying on capital, field and habitus, three concepts in Bourdieu‘s sociology, expounds on the construction of the translated text as hybridized cultural capital with the case study of A Hero Born translated by Anna Holmwood.Firstly, the application of field, habitus and capital to translation studies is reviewed to have a preliminary acquaintance of their relations. Then after the concept of cultural capital is introduced into translation studies, the translated text is defined as the hybridized cultural capital, and its inevitability, features and construction are investigated as well as the influences the translator with cross-cultural habitus and the translation field with multiple agents exert on its construction. Finally, the case study of A Hero Born translated by Anna Holmwood is carried out to demonstrate how the translated text as hybridized cultural capital is constructed.Analysis of theory and practice proves the explanatory power and validity of what we have recognized.Translated text as hybridized cultural capital,is hybridized by cultural capital from source and target fields, showing exoticness, acceptability and the property as a kind of power resource, which is the inevitable requirement of translation as interlingual cultural capital circulation.Propelled by his/her crosscultural habitus, the translator makes choices between source and target cultural capital by the hybridized translation strategy. In the translation field, the acceptability level of target readers, interest pursuit of patrons and power relations between the two countries all exerts their impacts on the construction of the translated text as hybridized cultural capital.Based on her cross-cultural habitus and the demand of the translation field,Holmwood constructs A Hero Born as hybridized cultural capital on dimensions of linguistic structure, wuxia culture and literary genre, thus assisting Chinese wuxia fiction to show its figure at the international stage.
