Study On The Theory Of Eros In The Symposium

As one of the first philosophers who studies the question of Eros,Plato expressed many thoughts about Eros by attendees in the Symposium.Based on Socrates' speech in the Symposium,this paper studies Plato's theory of Eros.It includes two parts: introduction and text.The introduction describes the research status of Symposium and Eros at home and abroad,the basic thinking and ideas of the paper.The text is divided into four chapters.The first chapter introduces the background of Eros theory and Eros' s nature,points out that Eros is seeking intermediary of the whole.The second and third chapters describe the ascending path and descending path of Eros through Socrates' eulogy and Alcibiades' eulogy interpretation.Ascending path is through the love on body,soul and knowledge,finally reach the highest stage of the eros,the love on beauty and good.Descending path using Socrates as an example,manifesting the abstinence and educational feature in Socrates' behavior and verbalism.The fourth chapter points out that the whole is the world of idea and the world of phenomenon.Seeking the whole is to purify the secular Eros.The ascending path of the Eros theory is consistent with the descending path.To practice the theory of Eros is to live in a philosophical life.
