This translation report focuses on the approaches adopted in the translation of Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of the novel For Today I Am a Boy in an attempt to discuss how to maintain the original style in translation.For Today I Am a Boy,is a novel written by Kim Fu,a Chinese Canadian woman writer.Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of this novel are taken as the source text.This novel tells the story of Peter Huang,the only son in the sea of daughters of a Chinese immigrant family in Canada.Peter is born male as the pride of his father;however,he knows he is meant to be a girl,and finally manages to find his true self and gain the sense of belonging.The translated chapters reveal the childhood of Peter,by contrasting cruel playground bullies with his gentle sisters,which awakes his desire to be a girl.Full of subtleties and complexities,these two chapters detail the inner world and mental activities of Peter as a little boy with the original style of the author,making it difficult to achieve stylistic equivalence in trget language.By illustrating and analyzing typical examples,this translation report compares literal translation and free translation on semantic level and syntactic level.The result suggests that free translation is more conducive in achieving stylistic equivalence in translation.
