| Mr.Lu Xun regarded science translation as the great cause of “improving ideas and complementing civilization.” From the perspective of Lu Xun?s translation practice,science translation should include the translation of popular science and the translation of science novels.In his career as a translator,the translation of science fiction and popular science plays a decisive role.When translating a science novel in 1903,it was also clearly stated in his novel that the translation was intended to make the reader gain knowledge,break the superstition,improve ideas and complement civilization.Some people think the translation of popular science is simple and lack of interest,but in fact it needs a solid bilingual foundation,translation skills and scientific knowledge.All countries around the world attach great importance to the popularization of popular science and scientific theory.Therefore,it is very important to improve the quality of popular science translation.This report is based on the commentary entrusted by Chengdu Science Education Base for Earthquake Prevention and Disaster Reduction,which is the first science education base for earthquake prevention and disaster reduction in the southwest China and also ranks in the top of the national bases for earthquake prevention and disaster reduction.The report summarizes some difficult translation problems in popular science texts,such as the translation of terminology,semi-terminology,translation of proper nouns and so on.Among them,terminology often appears in popular science texts and frequently appears in this original text.Therefore,the translation of terminologies should be paid more attention.What?s more? For long sentences and sentences with Chinese cultural characteristics,it is necessary to grasp the meanings of words and sentences so that the narrator can accurately convey the meanings to tourists while maintaining the gracefulness of sentences and showing Chinese culture.When translating popular science texts,it is necessary to use the proper translation methods in order to achieve the purpose of translation.The Skopos theory regards the purpose of translation as the primary consideration.This purpose determines the translator's methods of translation and strategies to produce results that are functionally appropriate to needs.Based on the Skopos theory of German functionalism school,the translator analyzes the difficulties encountered in the translation practice and provides the corresponding translation strategies,such as literal translation,explanation,transliteration and so on in order to help the narrator to better explain the earthquake-related knowledge,disseminate Chinese culture,and to improve the translation quality of the commentary as a popular science text so that some references for the translation of the related text can be provided.In addition,Chengdu Earthquake Prevention and Disaster Reduction Popular Science Education Base located in Jiezi Ancient Town of Chongzhou which attracts a large number of tourists each year.And Chongzhou,Dujiangyan and Wenchuan are all earthquake-prone zones.Through visiting here,visitors from foreign countries can learn about the historical experience of earthquake prevention and disaster mitigation accumulated for thousands of years in Chinese history which can be spread to the world and make contributions to human security.The translation report consists of six parts.First of all,it is a brief introduction,which is made up of the background,significance,and the structure.The second part is the task description.The third part is the literature review which introduces the definition of popular science and commentary as well as the previous studies of popular science translation.And the fourth part is the introduction of the theory.The fifth part is the case analysis which tells translation methods and supporting examples in order to achieve the three rules of Skopos theory.The last part is the conclusion that is made up of the findings,limitations and suggestions. |
