The agroecology textbook Agroecology: the Ecology of Sustainable Food Systems is written by Stephen R.Gliessman,Emeritus Professor of the University of California,USA,and published by CRC Press. This report selects Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 as the original text.Guided by register theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics, functional discourse analysis approach is used to study the translation of agroecology from English to Chinese. The significance lies in the discussion about the adjustment of the translation in context of situation when there are diversities of registers between the original text and the translation,by relating the subject matter, manifestation and reader's acceptance of the target text to verbal environments, which ensures the quality of the translation. This report is divided into five parts. The first part is a brief introduction to the publishing background of the original text with information of its author, the reason for its translation as well as the outline of the report. The second part involves theoretical framework preparation and translation tools. The third part is the most important part of the report, which focuses on the analyses of use-related variations in field, tenor and mode in light of register and their corresponding translation adjustments in translation and discusses the role of register in translation. The fourth part describes the methods and steps of the quality control and assessment. The final part makes a summary of the experience and concludes the task with relevant thinking. The author hopes that this report can arouse people's attention to the development of agroecology in China and provides a reference for the translation of agricultural science and technology texts from English to Chinese.Meanwhile, this report will urge the author to develop an awareness of interdisciplinary study and to enhance the understanding of Systemic Functional Linguistics as well as the ability to apply this theory in order to improve translation efficiency.
