The Analysis Of Attitude Resource In Donald J. Trump's Political Speeches From The Perspective Of Critical Discourse Analysis

At the beginning of 2017,the American business giant,Donald Trump,delivered his inauguration speech at the congress building which marks the beginning of his regime and was elected officially as the 45^th President of the United States.Trump,known as"the trans-boundary president",has shocked U.S.tradition politics sector with the peculiar sense of business flavor from his family and also brought unpredictable surprises to world politics.The success of Trump,on the one hand,has reflected the diversity of American political democracy on the other hand,has proved the special ability of Trump in the complicated political sector.There are lots of factors on Trump's political success in the United States,but one of the most important personal charming is his unique language.Trump has done a lot of political behaviors in a short time,and has delivered speeches or online comments in different occasions,which has attracted people'attention.The thesis attempts to find the Trump's real political intention based on the critical discourse analysis of"Inaugural Speech,Congress Speech and United Nations speech"in the framework of attitude resources subsystem of appraisal theory.While Martin's appraisal theory,as the extension of interpersonal function Systemic Function Linguistics?SFL?of M.K.Halliday,is used to describe and explain how to use the evaluation to build the role and coordinate interpersonal relationship with the language.Attitude resource,as the core subsystem,expresses the user's attitude and emotion of the behaviors directly in a quantitative way.Therefore,the thesis will collect the data of attitude resource of affect,judgment and appreciation three subsystems in quantitative way with the help of UAM Corpus.Based on the characteristics,the thesis attempts to interpret the implicit ideology of Trump's political speeches when combined with American social context.Through the quantitative and qualitative analysis of three speech texts,major findings can be concluded that judgment and appreciation system outnumber the emotional system,which reflects that Trump is good at controlling emotion;on the whole,positive attitudes are more than negative attitudes.Although the simple and easy words Trump has used in the speech,but we still can know his discourse strategy and ideology behind the speech texts of which are the real purpose to gain the power.Through the analysis of the distribution of attitude resource in Trump's political speeches,on one hand,we can know the hidden attitude and ideology on the other hand,it also provides a research attempts to the interpretation of political discourse for further researchers.
