Fast development of globalization enables the intercultural communication based on the Internet to become a trend and media report is the most influential one. This thesis employs Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis Theory as theoretical framework aiming to uncover the differences of the linguistic features and hidden ideologies between Australian media and Chinese media when reporting Belt&Road Initiative(BRI).In the case study,10 media reports on Belt&Road Initiative from Australian mainstream media-ABC News&Daily Telegraph from 2017 to 2018 and 10 from China Daily as control group are selected to conduct critical discourse analysis.Based on Fairclough's Three-Dimensional Model, the analysis proceeds at the three levels.Firstly, the text level, where Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar and Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions Theory are embedded,is concerned with the linguistic features of the discourse like transitivity, theme, modality and wording.Secondly, the discursive level mainly discusses the discourse representations and news resources. Finally, sociocultural level explains the re-construing effect of the social structure from the perspectives of culture, politics and economy. The study shows that 1)Australian media reports deliberately stress China's rising power and leader's ambition so as to stir the emotion of anti-China of the public.Although the theme Belt&Road Initiative is weakened to some extent,Australian media still grabs the chances to criticize it.On the other hand,Chinese media reports explain the core values and accomplishments Belt&Road Initiative has achieved.2)Australian media reports usually use indirect speech and the slipping status between direct and indirect speech, through which Australian media can gain the initiative to control readers' perception on Belt&Road Initiative and transmit their ideologies.3)Differences between Chinese and Australian culture lead to different attitudes towards the same subject. Moreover,Australia extremely relies on the United States in terms of national security but it is closely tied up with China in the economy. The intangible relationships among the three countries imply the hidden ideologies and values behind the discourses. In conclusion,Australian media reports claim China's power and ambition and imply Belt&Road Initiative is a tool for China to stir the weave at the world stage, while Chinese media reports consistently transmit that the aim of BRI is to promote mutual development and strive to establish a peaceful, prosperous and harmonious world.
