The Shape of Water, directed by Guillermo del Toro, tells a story of an amphibian man who was rescued from the U.S.military base by a mute woman,Elisa. The uniqueness of this film is: how should human get along with Nature at a period of accelerating contradiction with Nature. From the perspective of masculinity, parochiality and insatiability, this thesis analyses the film with hegemony theory, and explores how Strickland as the symbol of hegemony faces the crisis of his domination towards the marginalized, neighboring nation, and Nature. The body includes three chapters.Chapter one reveals the crisis of masculine hegemony, and explores rebellions from the marginalized due to Strickland's hegemonic masculinity.Chapter two studies parochial hegemony which produces self-closure and bores dark power among nations, and analyses the crisis of parochial hegemony originated from the contradiction between U.S.and the Soviet Union.Chapter three shows insatiable hegemony cultivates evil and destroys ecological balance because of its illusion effect, then reveals the crisis of insatiable hegemony towards the amphibian man.According to the above-mentioned analysis, this thesis concludes that masculine hegemony awaits its crisis for having stimulated rebellions from the marginalized;parochial hegemony suffers from its crisis by forming self-closure and dark-power circulation;and insatiable hegemony goes crisis from its devastating the balance of Nature.
