This thesis will study the Chinese-English translation of public signs in scenic spots from the perspective of the Cooperation Principle.This theory expresses the idea that there is a "unique communication" between the original writers and the translators,and the translators and the target readers.A successful "communication"can be achieved only when the original writers,translators,and target readers follow the four important principles of Cooperation Principle.This report will select the bilingual public signs of scenic spots in Sanya as an example,in order to classify and analyze the translation errors and to propose several suggestions on reducing the translation errors under the guidance of the Cooperative Principle.This paper consists of six chapters.The first chapter is the introduction of research background,research significance,research objectives and questions,research methodologies and the thesis framework.The second chapter is the literature review,which mainly concludes the previous studies made on Chinese-English translation of public signs.The third chapter introduces Cooperative Principle and the four maxims.The fourth chapter analyzes the Chinese-English translation problems exist in the public signs of tourist attractions in Sanya from the Cooperative Principle,and presents the enlightenment of Cooperative Principle in the Chinese-English translation of public signs in scenic spots;The sixth chapter provides several translation methods which include omission,negation and affirmation,borrow,and meeting international standards.The last chapter is the conclusion and reflection.According to the study,under the quantity maxim,the generally translation error is redundant information;under the quality maxim,misunderstanding of Chinese culture and mistranslation of the original text are the most common mistakes;under the relation maxim,mistakes appear to be irrelevant topic and ignorance of culture background;under the manner maxim,the obvious errors are wrong spelling,misuse of punctuation,incorrect collocation,and incomplete phrase or sentences.Therefore,translators should fully understand the meaning and the connotation of the original text,and the translation must meet the target readers' expression habits,meanwhile,translators should also pay attention to the conciseness and accuracy of the words.
