A Report On Simulated Interpreting Of Audio Broadcast Named "Meeting The Haihun Marquis" From The Perspective Of The Theme-rheme Theory

Archaeology functions as a critical tool in studying China's culture,making it easier for people to study culture and people's lifestyle in ancient times.Furthermore,archaeological cultural relics serve as crucial evidence in studying ancient culture and historic treasure.Audio broadcast represents an essential source of knowledge.In this sense,audio broadcast interpreting acts as an important tool in making archaeological knowledge of China more known to the world.On the basis of the report on simulated interpreting of the audio broadcast named“Meeting the Haihun Marquis”,this thesis describes the process and the research of this interpreting in detail.The process of this interpreting includes the preparation in practice and theory,the implementation of interpreting plan,transcription of the interpreting recording and post review.On the basis of this interpreting practice,the theory of textual function by M.A.K.Halliday is introduced into this practice and this practice will be studied from the point of view of the Theme choice.Besides,it is expected that some useful skills in interpreting will be gained through this practice.To sum up,the thesis studies two questions:(1)In which circumstances will people adopt the strategy of consistency in the Theme choice?(2)In which circumstances will people adopt the strategy of deviation in the Theme choice?In this study,the source language is Chinese and the target language is English.According to this study,it can be concluded that the strategy of consistency in the Theme choice is adopted more frequently than the strategy of deviation in the Theme choice in this interpreting.There are three situations where the strategy of consistency in the Theme choice is adopted,that is,the same participant,the same circumstance,and thematic markers are adopted in target language.In terms of the strategy of deviation in the Theme choice,there are two forms of deviation in the Theme choice,that is,shifting Themes and supplementing Themes.With regard to shifting Themes,three situations are summarized in this thesis.Firstly,when the theme in source language shifts frequently and randomly,then those different themes will be shifted into the same one in target language,making the process of interpreting clearer and smoother.Secondly,in C-E interpreting,the syntactic characteristics of English require frequent changes of sentence structure in Chinese.Accordingly,the Theme changes often.With regard to supplementing Themes,three situations are summarized in this thesis: supplementing topical Themes,supplementing textual Themes,and supplementing interpersonal Themes.Firstly,if there is not a Subject in a declarative sentence in source language,a topical Theme will be added in targeted language.Undoubtedly,in this sense,the participant should act as the topical Theme.Secondly,if sentence structures are loose without any conjunctions in source language,generally,conjunctions which act as textual Themes will be added in target language.Those adverbial phrases or prepositional phrases that are of connective function can also function as textual themes.Thirdly,for Chinese,people tend not to express their opinions,attitudes and mood directly and clearly,while the English inclines to be direct,interpersonal Themes usually are added in interpreting to make speakers' opinions and attitude clearer to others.It is general that supplementing interpersonal Themes should be acted as by adverbials or adverbial phrases showing attitude or opinions.It is hoped that those interpreting skills gained through this interpreting study will be beneficial to interpreting and serve as reliable references to interpreting quality evaluation.Apart from this,it is expected that this study will inject new vitality into audio broadcast interpreting and prove the practicability of the theory of textual function in interpreting practice.
