The film Three Billboards outside Ebbing,Missouri is a 2017 film directed by Martin McDonagh,nominated for seven awards,which finally won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor at the Oscar 90 th Academy Awards.It tells a story about a desperate mother renting three abandoned billboards to confront the local police because of her daughter's unsolved murder.The film leaves a deep impression on the audiences for its ingenious plot design,vivid character image and profound themes.McDonagh breaks traditional mode of suspense film and uses unique narrative strategies,making the plot design,character image,and theme present pluralistic characteristics and making audiences feel the artistic charm and innovation of the film.Based on the theory of narrative,this thesis goes to analyze the narrative strategies of the film Three Billboards outside Ebbing,Missouri from its plot design,shaping of character and expression of theme,proving the pluralistic characteristics of the narrative strategies presented in this film.The main body consists of three chapters.In the first chapter,it will go to talk about the pluralistic characteristics presented in the plot design of the film,mainly including the analysis of the story type,which is the integration of multiple film types,such as crime,suspense,drama and so on,the unique narrative structure which breaks the traditional mode and diverse use of narrative techniques,including suspense,conflict and detail.Then the second chapter goes to analyze pluralistic characteristics presented in the main characters who have multi-faceted human nature.The last chapter goes to analyze the pluralistic characteristics presented in the expression of theme,which conveys the profound meaning of life and implies social criticism about American society.
