A Study Of The Chinese Translations Of A Rose For Emily

A Rosefor Emily is a well-known short story novel by William Faulkner.Its superb narrative skills and subtle ideological connotation not only provide a wide space for the interpretation of the works,but also offer a variety of possibilities to cross-cultural translation.Based on the existing research results of A Rose for Emily’s original subject thought and artistic features in the English and Chinese academic circles,this paper takes the series of Chinese translations as the research object and uses the text reading and comparison analysis as the basic research method,focusing on the following four aspects:the title,the character image,important scenes and images and overall language style.Through comparing different translations of the ideological connotation in the series of Chinese translation versions,and distinguishing the gains and losses in them,this paper provides reference for the translation practice of classics English literature in the future.The introduction part explains the research object,the review of existing research,the significance of the topic and the research methods.The first part begins with the novel title,focusing on Faulkner’s own interpretation of the novel’s title and the research of the title by foreign researchers.On this basis,this part pays attention to different translations of the title.The second part focuses on the core character of the novel—Emily.From the overall impression and the language expression of the character,this part pays attention to the translator’s understanding and presentation of Emily’s image.The third part focuses on other profound images and scenes in the novel,including the big house where Emily lives,the body of the Homer,and the "huge meadow" used to describe the past.The keen perception and processing of the key images will directly affect the effect of the translations on the unique atmosphere of"Yuknapatapha lineage" in Faulkner’s novels.The fourth part focuses on the translator’s interpretation of the colloquial narrative of the humorous drama and the interpretative language style of the novel.The conclusion part summarizes the full text and points out the progress space for English literature translation in the future.
