An Analysis Of Thetranslation Of Culturally Loaded Terms In Legends Of The Condor Heroes From The Perspective Of Semantic Gaps

The Legend of the Condor Hero is a long martial arts novel written by Jin Yong and the first of Jin Yong's "Trilogy of Shooting Eagles".After a lapse of more than half a century,on February 22,2018,this martial arts work finally has an English translation.Currently,only the first volume is translated by Anna Holmwood,titled A Hero Born.The translator is a native English speaker.She took her master's degree at the University of Oxford in contemporary Chinese studies.She has worked as a Chinese book copyright broker for many years and is engaged in translation between English,Swedish and Chinese.Another is a translation is done by fans of Louis Cha from Wuxia Society.When the work was done was unkown.In all literary works,martial arts novels are unique and highly Chinese and they feature unique Jianghu culture and martial arts techniques in martial arts novels as well as Martial arts schools,nicknames,drugs,and even a unique interpretation of the structure of the human body in the eye of the traditional Chinese medicine.This undoubtedly poses a great obstacle to translators.The research is in this paper is based on the semantic gap.The cultural loaded words in Legends of the Condor Heroes are classified accordingly,and then the translation strategies of culturally loaded words in the two translations are compared.The study finds that two translations adopt basically the same strategies-literal translation and transliteration for terms absent in the target language and free translation for iterms of which only equivalants can be found in the target language-when it comes to the semantic gaps but differ in translating names.Anna Holmwood adopt transliteration and free tranlation for the most of imaginery names,and transliteration for real historical figures.While the fans from Wuxia Society adopt transliteration when it comes to names.
