Su Shi,as an encyclopedic literary master in Chinese history, influences his future generations with his unrestrained style and open-minded attitude towards life The Gay Genius:The Life and Times of Su Tungpo is a biography about Su Shi Through this work,Lin Yutang uses the magic pen to vividly depict the life of the litterateur and the authentic image of Su Tungpo. In this work,Lin Yutang translated many poems, letters written by Su Dongpo into English, which made Su's works spread overseas, for foreign readers to further understand his poetry, articles and his precious philosophy of lifeLin Yutang is a famous Chinese scholar, writer and translator. And he has been nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature for four times. His main works include the novel My Country and My People(1935),Moment in Peking(1939),Six Chapters of a Floating Life(1939)and so on,which are quite popular among the world. As the bridge between Chinese and western cultures in the 20th century,Lin has a thorough knowledge of both western and traditional Chinese culture, and has created and translated dozens of traditional Chinese classics, novels and biographies. And he is a person who tells the Chinese stories to foreigners and talks about foreign cultures with the Chinese. The Gay Genius that he wrote in English is one of his most satisfying works, which is very popular among readers. And this work, which contains a large number of poems, has been successfully spread overseas. It is inseparable from Lin Yutang's profound literary skills and appropriate choice of translation strategiesTaking the skopos theory as the theoretical framework, this thesis intends to take Lin's The Gay Genius as an example to analyze the choices and effects of different translation strategies due to different purposes under the guidance of the three rules of skopos theory. The skopos theory was first proposed by the German functional school Hans Vermeer on the basis of the Kaiserina Reiss' theory of functional equivalence in the 1970s.It is the most fundamental translation theory of the functional school, that is,the purpose of translation determines the process of translation. The skopos theory emphasizes that the translator does not have to hesitate between the literal translation and free translation, and should focus on the purpose of translation.Comparing with the traditional translation theory, the functional school breaks through the translation theory taking original text as the core, transforms the concept of translation from emphasizing the equivalence between original text and translated text into regarding translation as a purposeful cross-cultural communication activity. The functional school emphasizes the roles played by multiple participants in the translation process, emphasizes the skopos rule, enlarges the translator's freedom to a certain extent, and paves the way to explore translation theories.Through descriptive analysis, this thesis concludes that Lin Yutang has adopted various translation strategies such as substitution, amplification, simplification, transliteration, literal translation, and free translation in the translation process, which has achieved different effects. And on this basis, the thesis points out that the purpose of translation as the most important part of the translation process, should be emphasized by translators.Under the context that the complete equivalence between the original text and the translated text is almost impossible to achieve in translation, translators should adopt appropriate translation strategies, and try to make the translated text accepted by the target audience to further broaden the intercultural communication between literary works.Through this study, the author hopes that more researchers will focus on Lin Yutang's researches on translation strategies and translation theories so as to broaden the content of Lin Yutang research. In addition, the author expects more scholars to think more deeply about Chinese poetry translation.
