| In recent years,the problem of environmental pollution is becoming more and more serious,and it is urgent to control the environmental pollution.From the angle of critical discourse analysis,this paper appeals to people to protect the ecological environment and improve the ecological consciousness.The critical discourse analysis is one of the branches of critical linguistics.Many scholars have tried to use different analytical methods to analyze and study the environmental discourse,but did not make full use of the Fairclough's three-dimensional model of discourse analysis.At the same time,few scholars mention the subject of English news about air pollution.Therefore,this paper uses the combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis methods to analyze 22 pieces of English news about air pollution under the framework of Fairclough's three-dimensional model of discourse analysis.In order to ensure authority,this paper selects VOA News from the United States famous websites.In order to ensure timeliness,this paper selects VOA news from September2014 to September 2018.Under the framework of Fairclough's three-dimensional model of discourse analysis,this paper combines with Halliday's systematic functional grammar,which aims to analyze the transitivity features of texts,excavating the idea of anthropocentrism implied in the text,and then explains the interaction between news discourse and society.This study analyzes selected English news from three aspects,that is,description,interpretation and explanation.Furthermore,it put forwards three research questions:(1)What are the transitivity features of the English news at the descriptive level?(2)How is anthropocentrism embedded in the English news at the interpretive level?(3)What is the relationship between news reports and society at the explanative level?Through the analysis of selected samples,we can draw the following conclusions.First of all,at the descriptive level,the analysis of transitivity features of news reports shows that the six processes in the text are all embodied.Among them,the largest number of sentences is material clauses,and the second number is the verbalclauses.Next,the relational process is relatively more.In contrast,mental,existential and behavioral process are less used in texts,some of which are not even mentioned.After all,it belongs to news category.The frequency of material process and verbal process are higher,the frequency of relational process is relatively higher,and the process of mental,existence and behavior is relatively less.In the text,important participants involve governments,environmental organizations,pollutants,environmentalists and other factors.Secondly,at the interpretive level,the idea of anthropocentrism can be embed in material process,relational process and mental process.News reports are not arbitrary.They all represent the interests of their own countries or their governments.They try to protect their national interests and weaken their own governmental responsibilities in order to maximize their national interests.This is mainly embodied in the fact that material process can hide the implementers of the event,while relational process and existential process only focus on the event itself,ignoring the actions and processes that cause the event.Finally,at the explanative level,it mainly involves the explanation of the social factors on English news.News reports about air pollution come from and act on society.Since language plays an important role in the construction of our experience,facts and behaviors,news discourse should pay attention to integrate more ecological language into the text in order to awaken the public awareness of environmental protection.The study is of theoretical and practical significance.In a theoretical sense,the study expands the scope of application of critical discourse analysis theory.Meanwhile,it also proves that the critical discourse analysis can effectively reveal the hidden ideology in the news report once again.In the practical sense,it helps to wake up the readers' ecological consciousness and raise the critical reading ability.News media has a great influence and a wide range of communication,so we should enhance the influence of our national news media. |
