As one of the three basic elements of language,vocabulary plays a significant role in language learning.Nevertheless,in current middle schools,many teachers still lack of systematic vocabulary teaching strategies.The traditional vocabulary teaching strategies ask students to memorize words by rote and neglect using visual materials with modern computer technology in teaching.This study aims to explore the integration of dual coding theory and modern computer technology into the vocabulary classroom,by using multimodal teaching such as images,video,audio,to improve students' learning attitude,change learning methods,and improve vocabulary memory.Three research questions are to be addressed in this research project.1.What is student's attitude towards visual assisted vocabulary learning based on dual coding theory?2.What are the changes on vocabulary learning method of junior middle school students using dual coding theory after the computer-assisted instruction?3.To what extent does the computer-assisted dual coding theory improve student's vocabulary learning in junior middle school?This empirical study was carried out in Hou Ying Middle School,Haicheng City,Liaoning Province for about 4 months.The study was conducted in two parallel classes in the second grade with a total of 88 students.Class one was set as control class(CC)and class two was selected as experimental class(EC).Research instruments included pre-and post-test,questionnaires and the interview.The collected data were assessed and analyzed through both qualitative and quantitative methods with the help of SPSS 19.0 program.The research results indicated that using computer-assisted dual coding theory can effectively improve students' attitude towards vocabulary learning,transform students' traditional learning methods into dual coding method,and improve students' vocabulary proficiency.Finally,some implications and suggestions received from the study are discussed,which are expected to be beneficial for students' learning,teachers' teaching and further research.
