A Report On The Translation Of Long And Complex English Sentences Guided By The Functional Equivalence Theory

As we all know,complex sentences are ubiquitous in English texts.The translation for them deserves to be explored during the process of E-C translation.And following the supervisor's guiding requirement,the translator translated the fourth,fifth and sixth chapters of the book How Women Rise co-authored by the Sally Helgesen who is motivational best-selling author and Marshall Goldsmith.Therefore,the translator will explore how to accurately and efficiently translate long and complex English sentences in the source text under the guidance of functional equivalence theory.How Women Rise mainly describes the 12 bad habits that women often encounter in the workplace,and how to break through the development potential and pursue an effective way to promote career status.The authors use a large number of long sentences in the book.The more attached components long sentences have,the more difficult these are translated.Therefore,according to functional equivalence from Nida,some translation methods are well used,such as amplification method,conversion method,division method,recombination method and free translation.Then the translator analyses some translation examples of long and complex English sentences,which strives to achieve equivalence in lexical,syntactic as well as semantic aspects.By translating the book,on the one hand,the translator hopes to recognize inadequacy in translation aspects and strengthen to study translation.On the other hand,the book has great and high utilitarian value that can form an inspiration and motivation for the readers,especially female readers,to encourage them to realize higher career goals.Finally,the translator hopes that this translation report will also be a mirror for other people in the same research field.
