Imagery scanning and mental rotation are important components of imagery processing.Does hearing impaired children have better visual imagery processing ability than normal children? On the basis of reviewing the previous research results of individual imagery processing ability and children with hearing impairment, and on the basis of the theory of imagery processing sub-components proposed by Kosslyn et al..We studied the imagery processing of hearing impaired children and normal children in imagery scanning and mental rotation. We use ERP technology to explore the characteristics of the imagery processing of hearing-impaired children. There are two studies, including three experiments, which use the imagery scanning task, the object mental rotation task and the self mental rotation task, for 23 children aged 9-13 years with hearing impairment and 23 general children aged 9-13 years. The results of the study showed that the difference in behavioral outcomes between children with hearing impairment and those of the general children was not significant in the imagery scanning task, and they all clearly showed the distance effect in the imagery scanning task, but the children with hearing impairment had smaller N1 amplitude and larger P2 amplitude than the general control children;in the object mental rotation task, the general control children perform better, the reaction of the two groups of children increases with the increase of the rotation angle, reaches the peak at 180 °,and then begins to decrease after the reaction. Both groups of children significantly induced P300 and P500 components related to mental rotation at different rotation angles and positive mirror imagery, and the P300 and P500 components induced by hearing-impaired children were smaller than those of general control children; The response of the two groups of children showed an inverted U-shaped curve like the mental rotation of the object. The difference in the average amplitude between the two groups of children in P300 and P500 was not significant.Through experimental research, the following conclusions are drawn:Firstly, the primary high school hearing-impaired children have initially had the ability to form visual imagery and scanning.Secondly, the hearing-impaired children has a mental rotation processing mechanism similar to that of the general control children. In the mental rotation task, the inverted U-shaped curve appears as the rotation angle increases.Thirdly, the behavioral characteristics of children with hearing impairment in the object mental rotation task are worse than those of the general control children.Fourthly, the hearing-impaired children perform worse in the object mental rotation task than the self mental rotation task.Fifthly,Whether in the object mental rotation task or the self mental rotation task, the average volatility of the children with hearing impairment is smaller than that of the general control children, that is,the children with hearing impairment are impaired in the mental rotation tasks.
