Luciano Berio(1925-2003),a famous pioneer composer from Italian in the 20 th century.During44 years,he composed a series of solo and vocal solo works for 14 different instruments and vocals,"Sequenza",which is also his longest series.Sequenza IXa is the ninth solo piece of clarinet, which also played an incomparable role in promoting the modern clarinet performance techniques. Many clarinet performers are discouraged by the complexity and difficulty of the composition. This article analyses Sequenza IXa and the way of learning and practicing non-traditional clarinet playing techniques in this work from the perspective of clarinet performers. The purpose is to help the performers understand the background of the work, the difficult points of playing techniques and the characteristics of notation,so as to provide a reference for better performance of the work.In this paper, three chapters are used to introduce Berio and Sequenza IXa,and analyzed five non-traditional performing techniques: double-tonguing,glissando,flutter-tonguing,multiphonics and circular breathing,as well as the recording and performance characteristics of his works.
