Research On Existentialism In Eugene O'Neill's Early Works

As the founder and founder of modern American drama—Eugene O' Neill's,in his dramatic works,he deeply reflected the life of ordinary people at the bottom of society at that time.Like the existentialists,O' Neill's was also thinking about the human condition.This paper mainly studies the existentialism in O' Neill's early dramatic works.This paper is mainly divided into five parts.The first part,introduction.This paper mainly summarizes the research history and current situation of O' Neill's at home and abroad,and makes a brief summary of O'Neill's life and creation.It has become an important part of the study of O' Neill's to expound his dramatic works from the perspective of existentialism,but it is still concentrated in the later period.There is no interpretation of O' Neill's existentialism in his early works.The second part,mainly summarizes the existentialism in O' Nneill's works.Up to now,the research on the existentialism in O' Neill's works is mainly focused on the research on the later works.Starting from the whole,after summarizing the existentialism in O' Neill's later works,this paper mainly focuses on the research on the existentialism in his earlier works.The third part,mainly about the embodiment of O' Neill's existentialism in his early works.On the one hand,Nietzsche's dionysian spirit greatly influenced O' Neill's plays,resulting in tragic endings.The ending of O' Neil''s plays often shows a sense of nobility in the struggle between man and fate.On the other hand,in O' Neill's works,the tragic ending of some of the protagonists is no longer tragic,but another opening of the possibility of life,which opens up another pursuit of the meaning of life for the protagonists.This paper will use heidegger's description of being born to die.The fourth part is about the meaning of life from O' Neill's works.O' Neill's characters move from being to nothingness.“God is dead”,the continuous progress of science and technology,people's spiritual world began to lack,need to find sustenancefor their own life,but the modern society did not give human sustenance,so people began to become lonely,confused and even absurd,towards the void.O' Neill's found two ways to save himself: drunk and dreaming;The second is love.In O' Neill's dramatic works,he also reflects his own questioning of the value of human beings.The fifith part,the conclusion.Make a summary of the above.And said that in the materialistic society,we should face difficulties with its brave struggle,analyze the most true of their own,with love to enrich their own,surrounded by others.
