Guo Moruo is an important writer and translator in the history of modern Chinese literature.During the May Fourth Movement,Guo Moruo was actively engaged in foreign poetry translation, much as he created poetry of his own, contributing thereby in a unique way to the germination and development of Chinese modern poetry, especially the new poetry.Given the important role Guo Moruo's poetry translation played on his poetic creation, this thesis attempts to analyze the way Guo Moruo's poetry translation shaped his poetic creation by drawing from the insights of polysystem theory.Based on a careful analysis of the cultural milieu of the May Fourth Movement and on a comparison of concrete examples of poems from his first poetry anthology Goddess with those from his translated poems, this thesis argues that Guo Moruo's poetry translation influenced his own poetic creation in ways that may otherwise not be easily discerned, either in terms of the poetic form, language, and style,or in image and thematic concerns. Both his poetry translation and poetic creation were shaped by social and historical culture.
