Results Analysis Of Language Function In Establishing Social Identity

Identity can be translated into“??”,“??”,“???”,“???”in Chinese.It is generally believed by the scholars that the identity reveals relationship between seeking common points and reserving difference.The position of the individual in the social group is established by the comparison of difference and similarity between the individual and or other memberships in the social groups,which determines the identity.Identity is established by individuals through the participation in social practice activities where language,as an important tool for socialization,plays an important role in these processes.Communicators can establish different identities in different situations through different languages such as phonetics,vocabulary and syntax,so that the identity is characterized as complexity and dynamicity.Social identity in this thesis,refers to a person's role or position compared with the other members in the same group in society or the relationship between individuals and the their inter-group members,which has great significance to the member in both emotion and value.Each of us was born with different identities varying from the race,nationality,family background,and gender etc.The term social identity has been a hot topic in the popular subject areas such as sociology,psychology,linguistics,social psychology,etc.Based on the theory of critical discourse analysis,from the analytical perspectives of code-switching and speech adaptation,through the analyses of the film My Fair Lady,Coach Carter and the inaugural address of US President Donald Trump,the author adopts the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods and try to solve the following questions: 1.What is the result of language establishing social identity? 2.What is the process and means of language establishing social identity? 3.What is the enlightenment by the study of language establishing social identity?It is found that communicators construct different social identities in different social contexts,which mainly produces the following results: firstly,to achieve the communicative purpose in real-time context;secondly,to guide the way to think and behave of communicative objects by providing common expression conventions;thirdly,to seek self-identity and recognition in social groups.It is worth noting that the focus of this study is not on the construction of identity itself,but on exploring how the communicator constructs the specific identity,through the selections of language to convey the specific meaning,to implement the specific goal,to adjust or consolidate interpersonal relationships and even to achieve specific communicative effects.In some ways,this research can not only extend the research scope of critical discourse analysis,enrich and better the research of identity construction,but also help people realize that identity is constructed in the process of language selection,and the selection of language reflects social identity;it is strongly suggested in this paper that one make correct and rational choices of language and take a critical perspective on language construction identity issues,so as to provide practical advice to both parties in the future communication and effective ways to achieve communicative purposes.
